What the Material Allows
Animal horn is unique in itself and passes its qualities on to the horn buttons made from it. Its thickness, structure, patterns and colouring depend on the species, age and condition of the animal. Modern technology allows us to reveal the beauty of the material and shape it exactly to the designer’s specification.
Depending on size, additional finishing and a finer or coarser texture, horn buttons suit garments of different styles, fabrics and purposes. They are an excellent complement to clothing made from natural materials and to hand knits, to heavier garments, and to smart-casual style.
The History of Horn Buttons
When people began dressing in animal skins, they needed something to fasten them with. No one can say for certain exactly what that was. It is logical, however, that it was a material people encountered every day and first learned to work – probably wood and animal horn.
Of course, these were not horn buttons as we know them today, but what matters here is the function rather than the form.
An Accessible Material, Easy to Work
These were important factors when ancient people began making their first tools, ornaments and household objects. They also paved the way for the first horn buttons. Later, the natural beauty and the unique structure and pattern of horn from different animals were added to its practicality.
The raw material is soft enough to be worked effortlessly even with primitive tools, yet hard enough to do its job.
Over the millennia, people have never stopped using horn buttons, regardless of fashion or changing ideas of beauty and function.
Why We Still Choose Horn Buttons Today
Times and customs changed, and with them attitudes towards buttons. At times their purely practical role came to the fore – fastening and holding the garment securely to the body; at other times their magical role – serving as an amulet to protect the wearer from evil forces. Almost always, people also used buttons as decoration. Sometimes this became a real challenge – craftsmen, artists and designers competed over the small button, turning it into a piece of jewellery.
In other periods, buttons began to bear marks showing which family or lineage their owner belonged to.
The humble horn button fulfilled each of these roles successfully.
Today we value them above all for their natural origin, which meets the growing demand for eco-friendly materials. Their production does not pollute the environment, and unwanted or lost buttons biodegrade naturally. They feel genuine and warm. Because every piece of raw material is different, every finished horn button is unique, and it is almost impossible to find two that are exactly the same.
Bison Horn Buttons
Lovers of originality choose bison horn buttons. The horns of these large animals are very hard and therefore more difficult to work. To meet our customers’ requirements, we preserve the natural colouring and grain lines of the material. These buttons were once made entirely by hand; today we use modern machinery. They make a striking addition to coats, suits and trousers.
As a manufacturer, we produce horn buttons to order and wholesale – in the size, style and quantity your collection needs.
